Fashion Journalist Yoshiko Ikoma Explains Its Charm!

Giorgio Armani "Eccentrico" Exhibition

To commemorate its fifth anniversary, Armani/Ginza Tower is hosting the "Eccentrico Exhibition" on the 9th floor until December 13 (Thursday). We spoke with Yoshiko Ikoma, a fashion journalist who has interviewed Giorgio Armani himself and curated numerous art exhibitions, about the allure of the exhibition.

"It reminded me that fashion is fantasy."

On the 9th floor of Armani/Ginza Tower. Currently, hereGiorgio Armanithe "Eccentrico Exhibition," where the brand's spirit is gathered, is being held.

Ready-to-wear and Privé collections, presented from 1985 to the present, are lined up in a mystical space that feels like being in outer space.

"The fact that you can see pieces personally selected by Giorgio Armani himself, curated by Armani, is the ultimate luxury," says fashion journalist Yoshiko Ikoma, viewing the exhibition. "Also, despite the mix of dresses and accessories from various eras, there's no sense of dissonance. This exhibition proves the consistency of Giorgio Armani's worldview, which has flowed through the decades since the 80s, and that high-quality creations do not age."

The Fall/Winter 2007/2008 collection with its beautiful geometric patterns, the striking white plastic dress themed around the moon from Spring/Summer 2010, and the Giorgio Armani Privé Couture Collection Fall/Winter 2011/12, dedicated to Japan in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Standing before these creations, which are like jewels or works of art, one can only gasp in admiration.

"Isn't the greatest charm of this exhibition the ability to feel the fantasy of fashion, to take a trip into the 'universe of fashion'? The intoxication of fashion, which is difficult to achieve with real clothes or fast fashion. This exhibition has made us realize anew the inherent power of fashion to captivate people in an instant!"

"Your life might change after seeing this exhibition!"

This exhibition is titled "Eccentrico" with the intention of Giorgio Armani's belief that "being different stimulates creativity" and "it is important to have ideas that differ from norms and conventions." What does being "eccentric" mean to Ikoma-san?

"I believe that being eccentric drives evolution. In fashion, true style icons like Anna Piaggi and Isabella Blow were always eccentric. This includes not only what they wore, but also their way of life and their spirit. Their lives, which were creative and pioneering, had the power to evolve fashion."

And who is the eccentric muse of today? The answer is Lady Gaga! In fact, the "Eccentrico Exhibition" features a dress created by Giorgio Armani for her 2010 tour, which is a must-see. With its geometric form and mirror-like finish, it's a dress that truly expresses eccentricity itself.

Finally, when asked what one should do to enjoy this exhibition more, the answer was, "No prior preparation is needed. Just dive in!"

"I believe this 'Eccentrico Exhibition' has the power to change your life before and after seeing it. After experiencing the exhibition, many questions arise within you, such as 'What is beauty?' and 'What is fashion?', leading you to notice things you wouldn't normally perceive. Opportunities to see haute couture from a top maison live like this are rare. It will surely become a treasure for those who see it, so please visit and immerse yourself in the shower of inspiration from Armani's universe!!!"
