Warhol's Late Series: A Japanese Premiere
The major retrospective exhibition "ANDY WARHOL KYOTO" will be held from Saturday, September 17, 2022, at the Higashiyama Cube, the new wing of the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art (Sakyo Ward, Kyoto). MEDICOM TOY's "ANDY WARHOL Banana Plush "The Last Supper" 36 inch" and "BE@RBRICK ANDY WARHOL "The Last Supper" 100% & 400% / 1000%" will be available for pre-release at this venue. This article will introduce these items, along with an overview of "ANDY WARHOL KYOTO" and an explanation of the Japanese premiere work "The Last Supper" that served as the motif.
"ANDY WARHOL KYOTO" is the first exhibition in Japan composed entirely of works from the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the hometown of Warhol, renowned as a pioneer of pop art. Of the approximately 200 paintings and sculptures, and 15 video works on display, over 100 items, including the "three Marilyns" which are not permitted to leave the museum, will be shown in Japan for the first time.
The exhibited works are divided into themes, comprising five sections: "From Pittsburgh to Pre-Pop New York," "Warhol and Japan, and Kyoto," "The Birth of Warhol, the 'Pop Artist'," "Fleetingness and Eternity," and "Light and Shadow." In "Warhol and Japan, and Kyoto," items with connections to Japan, such as kimonos and postcards, will be displayed alongside artworks from Warhol's private collection.
The "ANDY WARHOL Banana Plush "The Last Supper" 36 inch" and "BE@RBRICK ANDY WARHOL "The Last Supper" 100% & 400% / 1000%" to be released this time are items inspired by "The Last Supper," which will be shown in Japan for the first time. Warhol created "The Last Supper," a theme explored by numerous artists including Leonardo da Vinci, as a series of nearly 100 works in his later years. These pieces express the sacred and the profane, the light and darkness of America, through various methods, including arrangements of da Vinci's "The Last Supper" and the use of commercial design packaging.
A world where Jesus Christ, motorcycles, and price tags of $6.99 intersect. The "ANDY WARHOL Banana Plush "The Last Supper" 36 inch" features a design where the work appears when the banana peel is removed. The "BE@RBRICK ANDY WARHOL "The Last Supper" 100% & 400% / 1000%" also faithfully reproduces the artwork's style.
It has been announced that this exhibition will not tour and will be held exclusively in Kyoto. For those interested in Warhol, or those who wish to learn about Warhol's connection to Japan, why not take this valuable opportunity to visit Kyoto?
