Four Years After the Earthquake, Montblanc Releases the "Meisterstück Miracle Pine" Special Japan Edition

MONTBLANC's special Japan edition "Meisterstück Miracle Pine" will be released on Wednesday, March 11. The 18k gold nib is engraved with the design of the "Miracle Pine" in Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture, and the cap ring is inscribed with "Rikuzentakata 11/03/2011" and the serial number. Furthermore, the barrel features a traditional Japanese pine design, evoking the pine forest of Takata Matsubara in its prime.

Holding a piece of the fallen branches, a wish for reconstruction

The tsunami from the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, washed away nearly all of the approximately 70,000 trees in Takata Matsubara, Rikuzentakata City. The only tree to survive was the "Miracle Pine," standing approximately 27.5 meters tall with a trunk diameter of 90 cm and an estimated age of 170 years.

Although it was sadly confirmed to have withered in May 2012, the Miracle Pine, which had been cherished as a "symbol of reconstruction" not only by local citizens but by people worldwide since immediately after the earthquake, is being preserved and maintained as a monument to be passed down to future generations.

Montblanc received a proposal from Rikuzentakata City to create a fountain pen using an actual branch of the "Miracle Pine" as a symbol of hope, and has now produced the "Meisterstück Miracle Pine."

The branch was transported to Montblanc's Hamburg workshop, where, after various trials and errors, skilled artisans brought Rikuzentakata City's dream to fruition. This fountain pen, made with precious materials, is exclusively available in Japan. The limited edition is set at 113 pieces.

The body and cap are made from the "Miracle Pine" with a high-gloss coating. The natural wood grain gives each piece a slightly different impression, while the characteristic gray hue and wavy pattern were created by the force of the tsunami and the salt from seawater.

To support the reconstruction of Rikuzentakata and the development of its education, Montblanc will donate an amount equivalent to 20% of the retail price upon the sale of all 113 limited edition "Meisterstück Miracle Pine" pens, in two installments in March and September 2015.

Of this amount, 80% will be donated to Rikuzentakata City schools for equipment, and the remaining 20% will go to the NPO Rikuzentakata City Support Liaison Council AidTAKATA for international exchange programs for children. Furthermore, the memorial edition with serial number 1/113 will be presented to Rikuzentakata City.

Additionally, on February 25th, a signing ceremony and press conference were held at Capital Hotel 1000 in Takata Town, Rikuzentakata City. The press conference featured Mayor Futoshi Towa of Rikuzentakata City, Jérôme Lambert, CEO of Montblanc International, and Maxime Alard, CEO of Montblanc Japan.

Also appearing as a guest was Miki Ando, a professional figure skater involved in reconstruction support activities in the Tohoku region.

Miki Ando commented on seeing the "Miracle Pine" in person: "As I walked from the car to the Miracle Pine, I was overwhelmed by its presence. I was deeply impressed by its sheer scale, realizing how this Miracle Pine supports the feelings of so many who suffered sorrow due to the Great East Japan Earthquake. I also strongly felt its vitality and felt as if I received energy from it."
