Andy Warhol's Muse
American Icon Marilyn Monroe

Text by SHINNO Kunihiko | Edit By KAWASE Takuro

When one speaks of the most famous works by the king of pop art, Andy Warhol, it is the portrait of Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe, an icon of the 1950s, that comes to mind.
Monroe, who began her career as a pin-up model, signed with 20th Century Fox in 1946. She starred in "Niagara," "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," and "How to Marry a Millionaire" in 1953, becoming a top star in both name and reputation with the major hit "The Seven Year Itch" (1955). She won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Billy Wilder's "Some Like It Hot" (1959).
Warhol, who also found success as a commercial illustrator in the 1950s, transitioned to the world of modern art in 1960. He created works inspired by Campbell's soup cans and dollar bills, and began mass-producing works using silkscreen printing from 1962. In August of that year, upon hearing the shocking news of Monroe's sudden death, he created her portrait by cropping a promotional photograph from the film "Niagara." Various color variations were produced, symbolizing American culture as a product of mass consumption.
The BE@RBRICK released by Medicom Toy this time features a print of that iconic Monroe portrait across its entire body. It is deeply moving to imagine this iconic American figure and masterpiece of pop art being passed on to the next generation through such a new product.
