Van Gogh's Own "The Potato Eaters" - His Greatest Masterpiece
The collection that formed the basis of the Van Gogh Museum includes approximately 200 oil paintings, 500 sketches, and 700 letters owned by Van Gogh's brother Theo (1857-1891), who was his financial and emotional supporter, and his wife Johanna (1862-1925), as well as about 500 ukiyo-e prints collected by Van Gogh and Theo. After the deaths of Theo and his wife, the collection was inherited by their only son Vincent Willem (1890-1978). With the cooperation of the Dutch government and the city of Amsterdam, Vincent established the Van Gogh Foundation in 1962, and the Van Gogh Museum opened in 1973.
Previous BE@RBRICK × Van Gogh Museum items include the first release, "Sunflowers" (released December 2019), followed by "Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat" (released December 2020), "Almond Blossom" (released January 2023), and "The Yellow House (The Street)" (released May 2025).
The newly released "BE@RBRICK × Van Gogh "The Potato Eaters" 100% & 400%" is inspired by Van Gogh's 1885 oil painting "The Potato Eaters," which he created while living with his parents in Nuenen, a Dutch rural town inhabited by many farmers, laborers, and weavers. In a letter to his brother, Van Gogh described the work, completed in the same year, as follows:
"The people eating potatoes by the light of their little lamps, I have thus finished the picture of peasant eaters... it expresses that they have tilled the earth themselves by means of what they have eaten. I want to convey a different way of life from ours through this painting."
How much Van Gogh himself cherished this work is evident in a letter he wrote to his sister-in-law two years later: "Regarding my own work, I think that the painting of the peasants eating potatoes, which I did in Nuenen, is ultimately my greatest masterpiece."
Eating is the most essential act of life. We wish to savor the keen sensibility of the observer Van Gogh through this BE@RBRICK.
