Alexander Girard, a leading figure in mid-century American design, continues to be highly popular today. Born in New York in 1907, Girard studied architecture and was active in a wide range of fields, including textile design, graphic art, furniture, exhibition, and interior design. Among his most widely known works is "International Love Heart." It was first designed in 1966 for The Compound Restaurant in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
