A Ceiling Painting Created by Hokusai Himself
Throughout his 90-year life, Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) produced numerous polychrome prints, picture books, and paintings, including the iconic "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji."
In 1842 (Tenpo 13), Hokusai visited Obuse in Shinshu for the first time at the age of 83. He stayed in the area for a period, interacting with the wealthy local farmer and merchant Kōzan Takai (1806-1883), and created artworks.
In Obuse, Hokusai's passion for painting remained undimmed even in his old age. At 85 in 1844 (Tenpo 15), he painted the ceiling of the Higashimachi festival float with "Dragon" and "Phoenix." At 86 in 1845 (Kōka 2), he created the ceiling paintings "Onami" and "Onnami" for the Kamimachi festival float. In 1847 (Kōka 4), at the age of 88, he painted the "Phoenix" on the main hall ceiling of the Iwamatsu-in Temple.
"Onami," featured in this BE@RBRICK 100% & 400% release, is one of a pair of works, "Onami" and "Onnami," painted by Hokusai himself as ceiling paintings for the Kamimachi (Kamimachi) festival float. Each is rendered on a paulownia wood panel approximately 118cm square.
The deep blue waves, violently swirling and crashing with spray, are filled with a power reminiscent of the "Great Wave off Kanagawa" from his famous series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji." The BE@RBRICK, adorned with water prints across its entire body, is a dynamic piece that seems to echo the sound of the waves Hokusai experienced.
