Introducing BE@RBRICK “Mr.Scarlet” by SHUN SUDO, a rising artist based in Tokyo, available in 100% & 400% and 1000% sizes.

Born in Tokyo in 1977, SHUN SUDO moved to the United States in his twenties. During his travels around the world, he became a self-taught artist. His works, primarily paintings, are a fusion of diverse elements, including American pop culture, traditional Japanese ink painting, and Western modern and contemporary art.

SUDO’s aspiration is for people of all nations to connect through art, moving towards a more beautiful and peaceful world. “BUTTON FLOWER” symbolizes the powerful union of two elements: the flower, which heals with its dignified presence and delicate beauty, and the button, which joins separate entities. It embodies SUDO’s philosophy of wishing for the hearts of people from different ethnicities, nations, and cultures to become one.

The “BE@RBRICK SHUN SUDO “Mr.Scarlet” 100% & 400% / 1000%” being released features a striking design with BUTTON FLOWERS rendered in black against a scarlet (deep crimson) base. To commemorate the release, we received a comment from SHUN SUDO.

SHUN SUDO
Born in Tokyo in 1977. He is a self-taught artist whose work is inspired by his global experiences.
His art, characterized by delicate brushstrokes that capture both the dynamism of ink wash painting and serene stillness, features fantastical "creatures" and "flowers" born from inspirations drawn from film, music, nature, and animation. His unique worldview, which defies categorization into a single genre, has garnered international attention in recent years.
In 2015, he held his first solo exhibition, “PAINT OVER,” in New York. Since then, he has held solo exhibitions both domestically and internationally, and created large-scale art walls at the Tokyo Olympic skateboarding venue, as well as in New York, Miami, and Ginza, Tokyo. He has also actively participated in collaborations with global companies such as SONY and PORSCHE, and in charity initiatives. In 2023, he was selected to design the charity T-shirt for the NTV program "24-Hour Television," following in the footsteps of contemporary artists Takashi Murakami and Yayoi Kusama.
In March 2024, he expanded his artistic expression by launching the BUTTON FLOWER BLOSSOMS collection in collaboration with the French luxury brand CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN, released simultaneously worldwide.

— Could you share your thoughts on the "BE@RBRICK SHUN SUDO “Mr.Scarlet” 100% & 400% / 1000%"?

When I faced the BE@RBRICK, I wanted to fill it with scarlet button flowers.
Looking at the finished piece, I realized that for me, red is the color of blood, the color of life.
I feel like I was able to create a BE@RBRICK as a living entity, one that seems ready to move at any moment,
and I am very happy about that.

— Could you tell us about your current creative activities?

I'm creating work overseas for the first time in a while.
By immersing myself in foreign cities not as a tourist, but as a resident, I'm receiving a lot of inspiration.
I plan to hold solo exhibitions overseas in the future as well.

— Once again, what are your thoughts on your work becoming a BE@RBRICK?

I usually work with flat surfaces like canvases, so painting on a three-dimensional object like a BE@RBRICK is a very fresh and enjoyable process.
I would be very happy if this BE@RBRICK could bring a smile and happiness to someone.
