The 'MY FIRST BE@RBRICK B@BY' series has reached its 50th installment! We spoke with Chiaki, the creator and designer, about this milestone piece named 'MUTANT'.

Since its debut in 2007, the 'MY FIRST BE@RBRICK B@BY' series has been a long-selling hit with various color variations. This popular model, inspired by a baby's rattle and featuring three colored beads inside its belly, has now reached its 50th design. To commemorate the release of the 'MY FIRST BE@RBRICK B@BY MUTANT 100% & 400% / 1000%', we asked Chiaki, the creator of the series, about her thoughts on this latest piece.

— This is the 50th design for 'MY FIRST BE@RBRICK B@BY'. How do you feel about having designed 50 variations that have been loved by so many people?

ChiakiI'm so happy that I've had the chance to design 50 pieces; I didn't realize it was that many.
I still clearly remember the first time I designed one back in 2007.
I was already a BE@RBRICK collector, so I often imagined what I would create if I ever had the chance to design one. When the opportunity came, I had so many ideas that I wondered which one to choose!
That's how MY FIRST BE@RBRICK B@BY was born, and I never imagined it would continue for so long.
I'm grateful.

— As this is the 50th installment, did you have any special feelings or thoughts when it came to the design and naming this time?

Chiaki'MUTANT' means a mutation, and it's a very important word to me.
My family used to say, 'Aren't you a mutant? You must be, right?'
At first glance, this design isn't overly flashy, but upon closer inspection, each part is made of a different material, making it very unique. I revised it many times to reach the final version.
I also see a bit of myself in it.
Even if you go slightly outside the lines, I want people to live strongly, resiliently, and true to themselves.

— To reiterate, what does 'MY FIRST BE@RBRICK B@BY' represent to you, Chiaki?

ChiakiDesigning MY FIRST BE@RBRICK B@BY has, before I knew it, become a very important part of my life's work.
Initially, I designed it for my daughter when she was a baby. Later, it led to collaborations with Colette in Paris, offers from places like Singapore and Macau, and seeing my designs displayed with care in famous stores when I traveled abroad to America and South Korea. I even received messages via social media from Canada, with people mistaking me for a designer. These experiences, which I wouldn't have had solely as a talent working in Japan, have given me so many new feelings.
It's all thanks to the fans who enjoy MY FIRST BE@RBRICK and to MEDICOM TOY.
I want to continue creating more cool and cute designs to give back to everyone.

— Regarding your recent activities, it was announced in April 2025 that you would assume the position of Senior Managing Director at 'SHOW-GUN,' a program production company led by producer and director McCoy Saito. We look forward to seeing your future endeavors. Could you share your current state of mind?

ChiakiI have become the Senior Managing Director of SHOW-GUN.
The three directors and I have launched an unprecedented real estate variety YouTube channel called 'Koboridai Hills',Koboridai Hillslaunched McCoy Saito's apparel brand 'BULL'S TOKYO,' created a large studio in a building in Roppongi, and purchased a building in Omotesando to establish a base for our communications. Furthermore, I want to focus more than ever on what I do best: 'designing something.'
Although it's very busy, unlike my work as a talent, I find it very fulfilling.
