British Housing Culture

In Britain, where DIY is popular, it’s quite common to freely paint the walls of one’s home or to hang wallpaper oneself. The passion the British invest in their home interior design might be akin to the Japanese passion for fashion. One’s home is a space to express individuality. Even someone who wears tattered clothes might surprise you with a remarkably stylish room when invited over. Merely surveying the room can offer glimpses into their character and life journey. This emphasis on inner substance, and the culture of cherishing one’s home as the center of daily life, is something I always find admirable.

Designs of Tradition and Innovation

Born in Britain, Cole & Son’s wallpapers have satisfied the interior design desires of the British for over a century, offering a collection of uniquely individual designs rarely seen elsewhere. Their level of craftsmanship is truly art.

Furthermore, their techniques and quality, underpinned by tradition, are impeccable. They are even used in the decoration of Buckingham Palace and other royal residences as a purveyor to the British Royal Household. The company owns over 4,000 woodblock printing plates and, while maintaining its original manufacturing techniques, actively adopts new inks and metal plates to continuously create captivating contemporary designs.

An Accent for Your Interior

While it might be challenging to apply these wallpapers to an entire wall in typical Japanese homes, they can be enjoyed in various ways with a little creativity. Consider using them on just one section of a wall, or if that’s difficult, frame a piece as artwork. In Japan, they are available at Tecido within the Living Design Center Ozone in Shinjuku. Why not visit their showroom? Seeing and touching the wallpapers in person is sure to spark many interior coordination ideas.
