The setting is Wakanda, a super-civilized nation hidden in the remote reaches of Africa. Upon the sudden death of his father, the protagonist T'Challa inherits the throne, and with it, the mission to protect the "secret" his homeland conceals. Released as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first Black superhero film, it became a global blockbuster. In America especially, it sparked a social phenomenon, surpassing $700 million in box office revenue approximately six months after its release. Black Panther set a record, becoming the third highest-grossing film of all time, following Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avatar.

The script and direction were handled by Ryan Coogler, born in 1986 and currently 32 years old. This is his third feature film, following Fruitvale Station ('13), a film based on a real-life shooting of a Black youth by a white police officer, and Creed ('15), a spin-off of the Rocky series. The film was highly acclaimed by critics as a masterpiece of superhero cinema, incorporating African history and culture, with a predominantly Black cast, including Chadwick Boseman who plays the protagonist T'Challa/Black Panther. Marvel Studios is reportedly preparing a sequel, further heightening expectations.
