A Documentary Film Premieres This Autumn
Ryuichi Sakamoto's Portrait Appears on T-Shirts

Text by SHINNNO Kunihiko

MEDICOM TOY's latest release is dedicated to the musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, known for his genre-defying work across classical, contemporary, and pop music. Under the banner "Connecting and Wearing His Legacy," this collection translates the portrait of an artist who shaped an era in Japan's music scene into apparel, with the concept of passing down his enduring icon status to future generations. This is a rock apparel brandAmplifier's release.

Ryuichi Sakamoto began his career in 1978 as a member of YMO, appeared as an actor in the 1983 film "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence," and received the first Academy Award for Best Original Score by a Japanese national for the 1987 film "The Last Emperor."

This March, he released his first original album in eight years, "async," and on November 4th, the documentary film "Ryuichi Sakamoto: CODA" is set to be released.

The T-shirts released at this timely juncture feature portraits of Sakamoto captured during three distinct periods: his YMO era, his solo career, and his present day.

Design A features a current portrait by the New York-based artist duo Zakkubalan, who created an installation for the "Ryuichi Sakamoto Installation Music Exhibition async" held at Watari-um Museum this spring.

Designs B and C are by Masayoshi Sukita, a globally acclaimed photographer known for his artistic portraits of T. Rex and David Bowie. Design B captures Sakamoto in the '90s, a period of further artistic growth after winning the Academy Award for Best Original Score. Design C uses the jacket photo from his third solo album, "Left Handed Dream," released in 1981 during his time with YMO.
