Basquiat: Provocateur of the Streets Through Poetry and Drawings
A Standard-Bearer of Neo-Expressionism Whose Popularity Endures Long After His Death

Text by SHINNO Kunihiko

Jean-Michel Basquiat (born December 22, 1960 – died August 12, 1988) was a painter born in Brooklyn, New York. He showed exceptional talent for drawing from a young age, beginning his spray-painting career on subway cars and building walls at the age of 17. He gained recognition for his unique sense of color and style inspired by graffiti, and the crown depicted in his works became his trademark.

For a time, he was also active in music, forming the band "GRAY." In the 1980s, he collaborated with pop art master Andy Warhol on artworks. He passed away in 1988 at the age of 27. Since then, his tumultuous life has been adapted into films, and his work "Untitled" fetched a record $110,487,500 (approximately 12.3 billion yen) at Sotheby's New York's evening sale this May, reaffirming his status as an artist of enduring interest.

The BE@RBRICK released this time is a model precisely printed with his artwork using the latest water-transfer printing technology. Its overwhelming presence, which seems to convey his very breath, is a must-have for any fan.
