The "Lightweight X2" in Paul Smith Design: Irresistible to All Who See It

Among the captivating new releases unveiled by Leica at the Photokina press day, one absolute must-see was the limited-edition "Leica X2 Paul Smith Edition," born from a collaboration with Britain's foremost designer, Paul Smith.

Announced in Berlin in May alongside theLeica M Monochrom"Leica X2," which has enjoyed strong sales worldwide, is a premium model that inherits Leica's proud heritage with its Barnack-style body and a 35mm equivalent prime lens ideal for snapshots. Now, Paul Smith has transformed this camera, previously known for its substantial feel, into something surprisingly light and playful.

While the internal specifications remain identical to the X2, the exterior, accessories, and special presentation box were all designed by Paul Smith.

The top plate is a vibrant fluorescent orange, and the camera body is clad in a subdued British Racing Green leather. The base plate is a vivid yellow. Etched onto the lid of the built-in flash is a humorous lightbulb illustration, reportedly hand-drawn by Paul Smith himself. It also comes with a taupe strap and a camera protector in the same color, along with a lens cloth. Packaged in a special box, this limited edition of just 1500 units worldwide is scheduled for release starting in November.

"Leica is a brand that is both classic and possesses a surprising twist. We wanted to do something groundbreaking this time. The X series is loved by a wider audience than the M series, so it's true that several fashion brands were considered. However, collaborating with someone who lacks insight into photography or doesn't understand Leica's value would be meaningless. In that regard, Mr. Paul Smith has experience shooting with his own Leica and, more importantly, loves photography more than anyone. That's why we entrusted him with the entire design." Mike Herbert, who oversees product development as head of the X series, explained the rationale behind the collaboration.

With substance that satisfies everyone from beginners to professionals, and a stylish exterior that appeals to fashion enthusiasts, this is the most captivating camera at Photokina 2012.

The X2 Also Allows for "Your Own Personal Camera"

There's another welcome piece of news regarding the "Leica X2": the "Leica à la carte" program, previously exclusive to Leica M film cameras, is now available for the X2. This means you can order your own unique Leica X2, choosing from 10 colors including vibrant options like green, blue, and beige, and selecting leather finishes such as lizard or ostrich effect for the exterior. You can also customize accessories like the strap to match. Models ordered through the "à la carte" program will feature a titanium-colored body, distinct from the standard model.

Furthermore, it's possible to engrave names or messages on the flash cover, the top of the top cover, or the back of the top cover. You can even simulate the look of your customized "own personal Leica X2" on the Leica Camera website (www.leica-camera.co.jp). Prices will vary depending on the specifications, but this service is set to launch in November at Leica Stores and Leica Boutiques. This is great news for fans who desire a "one-of-a-kind" camera based on the X2.

The "M-E": Enjoy the M System Simply

In addition to the flagship "Leica M" already reported, there are other new M system models worth noting. The "Leica M-E" has arrived as an entry-level, simplified model for the M system.

Equipped with the same 18-megapixel full-frame CCD image sensor and image processing engine as the "Leica M9," this model, painted in anthracite gray, is simpler in every respect compared to the higher-end Leica M.

"The M9 was so well-executed that there were internal voices saying it would be a shame to discontinue it. We also believe that CCD sensors are superior to CMOS. Customers have also expressed a desire for a simpler model without video recording functionality. Therefore, we decided to release this model based on the M9. In essence, this model can be considered a 'second M9.' Since development costs are minimal, we expect the price to be more accessible," explained Stefan Daniel, who oversees product development as Leica Camera AG's Head of Technical Operations.

The release is scheduled for October. While the price is yet to be determined, it promises to be an attractive option not only for M system beginners but also for owners of M-mount film cameras who have hesitated to purchase a digital body due to the cost.

Compact Camera Models Also Renewed for Enhanced Usability

While the new M, the limited-edition X2, and the customizable models may capture most of the attention, the renewal of Leica Camera's entry-level compact digital models is also significant news.

The "Leica D-LUX 6" is the latest compact digital camera featuring a bright F1.4 lens. The "Leica V-LUX4" is an all-around digital model equipped with a 24x optical zoom lens, covering focal lengths from wide-angle to super-telephoto (equivalent to 25-600mm in 35mm film format).

Both models seamlessly blend modern usability and features with Leica's distinctive commitment to quality. For those looking to start their digital camera journey with Leica, these models are scheduled to appear in stores from November. We encourage you to experience their appeal firsthand.
