Capturing Landscapes Like Taking Notes

From Kathmandu, Nepal, a domestic flight takes you to Lukla, the closest airport to the Himalayas. From there, it's a further walk to Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa hub. This town, a 'bazaar,' holds a market every Saturday. From here, you can overlook the Himalayan peaks. Besides Everest, there are various other mountains. Ama Dablam, with its beautifully sharp summit, Khumbila, the sacred mountain of the Sherpa people which they are forbidden to climb, and other mountains ranging from 6,000 to 8,000 meters like Thamserku and Lhotse.

However, the period during which one can capture such naturally beautiful scenery is limited. Only during specific times in April-May and October-November can such majestic views be clearly seen. In summer, the monsoon obscures them, and in winter, snow hides the full grandeur of the Himalayas.

Naoki Ishikawa visited this region in November, during the prime season, and continued to shoot landscapes with the GR. The GR's minimalist approach, focusing solely on photography by stripping away unnecessary functions, resonated with Ishikawa.

"The GR is very compact. On this trip, I carried it in a pouch attached to my belt loop, so I could take it out anytime. With no superfluous functions, it's just about pressing the shutter. Even in harsh conditions of sandstorms and severe cold, I was able to capture landscapes as if I were taking notes."

Tough and usable without overthinking. The high lens performance resulted in landscapes captured with slow shutter speeds, and those shot with the built-in flash, that were stunningly beautiful for a compact camera.
