Next-Generation Tray Made from Cedar Thinnings

"REST" is a wireless charger compatible with the Qi standard (an international standard for wireless power transfer established by the Wireless Power Consortium), which is increasingly adopted by smartphones and other devices. This is Bsize's second product, following the LED desk light "STROKE," which won the Good Design Award and the red dot design award.

Its appearance is a simple tray-like form, made from compressed cedar wood. The circuitry and other components are housed within a 12cm by 12cm, 1.2cm thick frame. The name is derived from the idea that it is a resting place for smartphones (REST) and a product born from the forest (FOREST).

It charges any Qi-compatible product, including smartphones, digital cameras, mobile batteries, and tablets, simply by placing them on the tray. This eliminates the need for individual AC adapters, chargers, and cables for each device.

The cedar used in REST is a material with a coarse grain and soft texture, previously considered unsuitable for furniture and home appliances. By applying heat compression technology, the cedar is compressed to half its original thickness. This increases its hardness threefold, making it possible to create a home appliance using domestic cedar thinnings for the first time.

A Product Selected from 4,615 Entries

The "iF design award" that REST has received is a globally prestigious design award with a 60-year history. Each year, it selects outstanding designs from industrial products worldwide in three categories: Communication, Product, and Package. In 2014, there were 4,615 entries from 55 countries, and the products were rigorously judged by 49 experts from around the world. The award was given in recognition of its originality, aesthetics, material selection, ergonomics, and technological innovation.

The cedar's texture, which doesn't immediately suggest it's a charger or the act of charging, harmonizes with the interior of living rooms and bedrooms. It will naturally blend into any space.
