SIGMA sd Quattro: The First Mirrorless Camera from SIGMA

SIGMA has launched its first mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera, the "SIGMA sd Quattro," on Thursday, July 7, 2016. It features the world's only direct image sensor that employs a vertical color separation method, arranging photodiodes in three layers at different depths within the silicon to separate colors. Inheriting the Core Concept of the SIGMA SD1 Merrill, Achieving Both High Image Quality and Compactness

SIGMA, a camera manufacturer renowned for its interchangeable lenses compatible with various mounts and the highly detailed image quality of its "SIGMA dp Quattro series" and "SIGMA DP series" compact digital cameras, commands a devoted following among core fans. The "SIGMA sd Quattro," the company's first mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera, long awaited since its announcement earlier this year, is finally available.

While inheriting the fundamental concept of the "SIGMA SD1 Merrill," a masterpiece that embodies the company's photographic philosophy and technological vision, it adopts a mirrorless structure. As a lens-interchangeable digital camera, it achieves high image quality through a high-performance image sensor that belies its compact and lightweight body, similar to the SIGMA dp Quattro series.

The lens mount is the SIGMA SA bayonet mount. This system fully leverages the optical performance of the SIGMA GLOBAL VISION lens series, comprising three concept lines—"Contemporary," "Art," and "Sports"—which have catered to the diverse creative needs of photographers with interchangeable lenses for SLR cameras.

Like the SIGMA dp Quattro series, it is equipped with the APS-C size "Foveon X3 Direct Image Sensor Quattro." This high-sensitivity sensor, with approximately 39 million pixels, utilizes the world's only vertical color separation method to capture colors as they are, delivering high-definition rendering comparable to medium-format cameras.

Furthermore, it features the "SFD (Super Fine Detail)" shooting mode, which maximizes the sensor's performance. By capturing seven images with different exposures in a single release, it generates dedicated RAW data. This allows for noise-free, high-definition image creation that surpasses previous capabilities.

The distinctive, avant-garde design, characteristic of the "Quattro" series, is another point that will undoubtedly captivate fans eagerly awaiting a successor. The camera will be available as a body-only option and as a lens kit that includes the "30mm F1.4 DC HSM | Art." It is crafted as a single unit—encompassing lens, sensor, and design—worthy of any photographic artist.
