A City of Craftsmanship Famous for Copperware, Lacquerware, and Aluminum

Takaoka City, with a population of 170,000, is located in the northwestern part of Toyama Prefecture. The roots of Takaoka copperware trace back to seven master casters summoned by Toshinaga Maeda, the second lord of the Kaga domain, when he established the city. Alongside Takaoka lacquerware, which began around the same time, these traditions continue to be passed down with the same spirit and skill today. Beyond traditional industries like copperware and lacquerware, Takaoka is also known as a "city of manufacturing" that embraces new industries, boasting the highest production value in Japan for aluminum products.


The Takaoka Craft Competition was initiated by young artisans (Takaoka Traditional Industry Youth Association) seeking to carry on this legacy, aiming to forge the future of Japanese crafts and factory crafts. It is held with the unified support of local industries, the Chamber of Commerce, and the government, marking its 27th year.

Takaoka Craft Market to be Held October 3-7, 2013

The "Craft Market" (Ichibamachi), held across multiple venues in Takaoka city, will take place again this year, coinciding with the exhibition period for the craft competition's award-winning entries. The event promises a rich program, including "Takaoka Craftourismo" factory tours, "Crafts of Cuisine" where participants can enjoy meals served in artisan pottery, craft artist exhibitions, walking workshops, and a stamp rally. Furthermore, this year, the "Design Wave in Toyama," a product design competition hosted by Toyama Prefecture, will also be held in Takaoka during the same period.
