Adding New Colors and Free Forms to "Kutani Five Colors": Hina Dolls to Celebrate Spring

Shinobu Yamashita, 32, is gaining attention as a young female artist. She creates new forms of beauty by infusing traditional techniques with her contemporary sensibilities.

Regarding her vibrant works, Yamashita explains, "Kutani ware, a traditional craft of Kanazawa, is characterized by its painting. While typically using the 'Kutani Five Colors' – red, yellow, green, purple, and indigo – I expand the palette to over ten colors to depict my designs."

Furthermore, one of her unique appeals lies in her color usage, incorporating black, which is rarely used in traditional Kutani ware, to make other colors appear more vivid. This exhibition will feature Hina dolls celebrating the spring festival, alongside coffee cups and plates.
