D&DEPARTMENT PROJECT

Japanese Technology and Individuality Through the Lens of Good Design Awards

"47 GOOD DESIGN - Good Design Awards of 47 Prefectures" Exhibition

The "d47 MUSEUM" in Tokyo's Shibuya Hikarie, operated by "D&DEPARTMENT PROJECT," which focuses on long-life design, will host "47 GOOD DESIGN - Good Design Awards of 47 Prefectures" from November 1st (Thursday) to January 27th, 2013 (Sunday). The exhibition selects designs with regional characteristics and "local flavor" from industrial products and architecture that have received Good Design Awards in recent years, categorized by prefecture. It showcases high technology, regional individuality, and corporate distinctiveness in an exhibition format.

Designs That Have Supported Japanese Manufacturing and Lifestyles

The "d47 MUSEUM" is a new style of product museum where you can discover the unique character of each of Japan's 47 prefectures. It selects themes from all genres, including architecture, design, crafts, food, fashion, agriculture, and the natural environment, curates and edits them originally, and communicates the present state of Japan to the world.

The fourth special exhibition, "47 GOOD DESIGN - Good Design Awards of 47 Prefectures," focuses, as the title suggests, on the Good Design Awards. The "Good Design Award (G Mark)" is a comprehensive design promotion movement organized by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion. Since its establishment in 1957, it has been active for over 50 years as an indicator of "good design." It evaluates designs based on the perspective of whether they can enrich "life and society," with approximately 1,000 awards granted annually, totaling about 38,000 over 55 years. This exhibition further selects about 3 to 8 award-winning designs from each prefecture, totaling around 180 items. It offers a valuable opportunity to learn about the industrial and corporate technological prowess that has enriched society since the post-war era.

Tokushima Prefecture: Mr. Tsukasa's Ohitsu (Rice Tub): G's principle Inc.

The exhibition features designs that have continued to be loved as traditional crafts or local industries and have supported Japanese manufacturing and lifestyles, such as Dainichijyo Kika Co., Ltd. (Osaka Prefecture)'s "Mosquito Coil Kincho Coil" and G's principle Inc. (Tokushima Prefecture)'s "Mr. Tsukasa's Ohitsu." Each design evokes a sense of warmth and the delicate sensibilities of the Japanese people.
During the exhibition period, a "G Mark Shop" space will be available for purchasing some of the exhibited items, and events and workshops will be held to convey the exhibition's content more dynamically. This exhibition promises to be an opportunity to re-appreciate the strength of Japan's industry and design.
