A Long-Awaited Entry into Mirrorless

In the realm of mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras, which has become firmly established, a flurry of new products were announced this autumn, including the ultra-compact "PENTAX Q" and Sony's "NEX-7." Among them, Nikon's entry is particularly noteworthy. Until now, the company has focused on higher-end DSLRs and compact digital cameras, but it is finally venturing into the mirrorless market.

Announcing Two Models: "Nikon 1 J1" and "Nikon 1 V1"

The "Nikon 1" series, announced this time, features a newly developed "CX format" (13.2 x 8.8 mm) 10.1-megapixel "Super High-Speed AF CMOS Sensor." It also adopts the newly developed "Nikon 1 Mount." Existing "NIKKOR" lenses can be attached using an optional mount adapter.

The newly developed "Super High-Speed AF CMOS Sensor" is Nikon's new imaging format CMOS sensor, the "Nikon CX format." It is the world's first (as of September 2011) lens-interchangeable digital camera to incorporate phase-detection AF on the imaging plane, a technology previously used in compact digital cameras, achieving the world's fastest AF.

The standard zoom lens kit for the "J1," available in five colors, is expected to retail around 70,000 yen. The higher-end "V1," available in two colors and featuring a built-in viewfinder, with a slim lens kit, is anticipated to be around 89,000 yen. Nikon, a leader in the camera industry, is entering the mirrorless market. We eagerly await its release on October 20th.
