Toyota's Grand Renewal: Passing Down Sports Car Craftsmanship to the Next Generation

Three models were world-premiered, positioned as Toyota's flagship sports cars, following the Toyota 2000GT and Lexus LFA.

These three models—the "GR GT," "GR GT3," and "Lexus LFA Concept"—were born from the vision of Master Driver Morizo, Chairman Akio Toyoda, who stated, "As part of Toyota's grand renewal, we must pass down the skills that carmakers should preserve to the next generation."

Shikinen Sengu is a traditional Shinto ritual where shrine buildings are rebuilt every set number of years, with the deity being moved to the new structure. A famous example is at Ise Grand Shrine, where rebuilding the shrine approximately every 20 years has ensured the preservation of its structures and the techniques involved.

Toyota is undertaking its own "Shikinen Sengu" through sports car development, aiming to protect fundamental car-making skills and incorporate new technologies to pass them on to the next generation.

All models are being developed under a shared philosophy centered on three key elements: a low center of gravity, lightweight and high rigidity, and aerodynamic performance. Further development is planned for these models.

The "GR GT," designed for overwhelming performance, has seen development participation from its concept stage by a diverse range of drivers, both internal and external, including Master Driver Morizo.

Development prioritizes the driver's perspective in every aspect, including the driving position. The car is pushing boundaries with unprecedented challenges in all areas, from development to manufacturing, including the active adoption of new technologies exclusive to Toyota.

The "GR GT" features an all-aluminum frame, a first for Toyota, which achieves low weight and high rigidity, centered around an FR (front-engine, rear-drive) vehicle package. Its design also pursues aerodynamic performance.

The powertrain is a newly developed 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo. The drivetrain incorporates a torque tube and transaxle layout made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP). Development targets have been set for a system output of over 650 ps, a maximum system torque of over 850 Nm, and a top speed exceeding 320 km/h.

The rear transaxle houses an 8-speed automatic transmission, a single motor, and a mechanical LSD. The pursuit is for performance that is both accessible to drivers of all skill levels and allows for genuine interaction with the car.

Meanwhile, the "GR GT3" has been developed with the aim of competing in races worldwide. It is a racing car compliant with the FIA GT3 regulations for the top category of customer motorsports based on production cars. Preparations are underway to establish an optimal customer support system for clients participating in GT3 international races.

The Lexus "LFA Concept" is reborn as a BEV sports car, approximately 15 years after the debut of its predecessor. Moving forward, it will be developed to inherit and evolve the spirit of the LFA, pursuing a harmonious blend of design and driving dynamics.

Following the announcement of these models, GR's new TV commercial, "THE OVERTAKE," was also released on December 5th.

The commercial depicts the "GR GT" overtaking Toyota's past flagships, expressing the spirit of "inheritance and innovation" and a unique worldview through music and visuals, accompanied by an original song by Takkyu Ishino.
