Alfa Romeo's Masterpiece 5-Door Hatchback
The "Giulietta" that has now landed in Japan is the third generation, following the first generation that appeared in 1954 after World War II and signaled Alfa Romeo's transition to a mass-production manufacturer, and the second generation that debuted in 1977 and was produced until 1985.
The slightly larger platform, measuring 4351mm in length, 1798mm in width, and 1465mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2634mm and tread of 1555mm/1555mm, is named "compact" and is a completely new development, not a carry-over from other models. The high-rigidity chassis is combined with newly designed MacPherson strut suspension at the front and multi-link independent suspension at the rear. A dual-pinion electric power steering system, directly connected to the steering column, is said to provide excellent handling feel. The design is the work of the Alfa Styling Center, overseen by Lorenzo Ramaciotti, who previously worked at Pininfarina and is now Fiat Group's Design Director. This is a masterpiece from Alfa Romeo, worthy of being a rival to the Volkswagen Golf, a representative of the C-segment.
Three Models for Japan, Plus Special Limited Editions
Three grades will be introduced in Japan: the base model "Sprint" and the sportier "Competizione" will feature a 1.4-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine with a maximum output of 170ps, while the "Quadrifoglio Verde" will be equipped with a 1.75-liter 4-cylinder direct-injection turbo engine delivering a maximum output of 235ps.
The former engine, also used in the company's "MiTo QV," features the latest "MultiAir" electronic valve timing system and is paired with a 6-speed, twin-clutch, 2-pedal transmission, achieving 0-100km/h in 7.8 seconds and a top speed of 218km/h. Environmental performance is also high, with fuel consumption of 4.6 L/100km (21.7 km/L) and CO2 emissions of 134g/km. Meanwhile, the engine for the high-performance "Quadrifoglio Verde" model incorporates technologies such as dual valve timing and a scavenging control system to avoid turbo lag, producing a maximum torque of 340Nm at 1900rpm. It is paired with a 3-pedal, 6-speed manual transmission, achieving 0-100km/h in 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 242km/h.
The anticipated prices are 3.18 million yen for the Sprint, 3.58 million yen for the Competizione, and 3.88 million yen for the Quadrifoglio Verde.
To commemorate the Giulietta's launch in Japan, two special limited editions will also be released starting February 4th. The "Giulietta Competizione "Alfaristi"", limited to 75 units, is a special specification of the Competizione equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission. The "Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde "Alfaristi"", limited to 50 units, features left-hand drive. It is fitted with exclusive 18-inch aero wheels and finished in "Competizione Red," a three-layer metallic paint previously used only on theAlfa Romeo 8C" models. The prices are 3.48 million yen for the former and 3.98 million yen for the latter.
