Cheaper Than Prius, Better Fuel Economy

The concept car "Prius c," announced at the Detroit Motor Show in January, appears in a form intended for mass production.

According to Toyota, the Aqua is a compact, hybrid-exclusive model that pursues overwhelming fuel efficiency, ease of use, driving pleasure, and an affordable price, all to deliver "the joy of hybrid cars to more customers."

While full details have not yet been revealed, the powertrain is a compact and lightweight hybrid system combining a 1.5-liter engine with a motor. It features a low-center-of-gravity package with compact component placement. This lowered center of gravity is said to contribute to agile handling and a class-above level of interior space and luggage capacity.

Fuel economy is rated at 35 km/ℓ in the JC08 mode and 40 km/ℓ in the 10-15 mode, an improvement of approximately 5 km/ℓ over the Prius in both cycles.

Compared to the Prius, the body dimensions are shorter by 465mm in length, 50mm in width, 45mm in height, and the wheelbase is 150mm shorter, making it exceptionally compact and easy to maneuver.

The Aqua is scheduled for release in Japan in late December 2011 and will be sequentially launched in various countries and regions under the name Prius c.
