Not C or 3, but the Premium and Sports Sedans: Part 1
Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio | The Alfa Romeo Giulia
An Italian Challenger to the M3 and AMG C-Class
This is a first-drive report from the annual test drive event held in February for the press by the Japan Automobile Importers Association (JAIA). As the first installment of our sedan series, we test-drove the "Giulia Quadrifoglio," released by Alfa Romeo as a competitor to the BMW "M3" and Mercedes-AMG "C."

Supercar-Level Performance: 0-100km/h in 3.9 Seconds, Top Speed of 307km/h
When considering a mid-size high-performance sports sedan, the BMW "M3" and Mercedes-AMG "C" are undoubtedly the first models that come to mind. In 2015, marking Alfa Romeo's 105th anniversary, the Italian marque debuted its rival, the rear-wheel-drive sedan "Giulia."Giulia""The top-tier "Quadrifoglio" version of the Giulia is its flagship model.
The 2,891cc V6 twin-turbo engine with intercooler, mounted deep within the front, produces a maximum output of 510ps at 6,500rpm and a peak torque of 600Nm at 2,550rpm. Developed by engineers from Ferrari, this 90-degree V6 engine shares the same bore and stroke as the 90-degree V8 found in the Ferrari California T. Considering it as a modular engine with two cylinders removed, the concept becomes clear.
By using carbon fiber for the engine hood and roof panels, which are aluminum in the standard model, weight has been reduced, achieving a power-to-weight ratio of under 3.0kg/ps. Driving the rear wheels through an 8-speed electronic automatic transmission, it boasts supercar-level performance with 0-100km/h acceleration in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 307km/h.
The test car, in Trofeo White with dimensions of 4,635mm long, 1,865mm wide, and 1,435mm high, presents a classic rear-wheel-drive silhouette with its cabin set rearward. Details such as the shield-shaped front grille with Alfa's traditional crest depicting a serpent swallowing its young, the active carbon fiber front splitter, gunmetal 19-inch wheels fitted with Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires (245/35 front, 285/30 rear), red brake calipers, carbon fiber rear spoiler and diffuser, dual exhaust tips, and the distinctive Quadrifoglio (four-leaf clover) badge on the fender, all powerfully stimulate the desire for ownership.

V6 Unit Delivers Impressive Torque in the Mid-Range
Upon starting, one is immediately struck by the steering's weight and quickness. There is virtually no play; the car's nose reacts sensitively to the slightest movement of the driver's arms. While I have driven the M3 and C63, I don't recall them feeling this immediate.
Driving modes can be selected via the DNA Pro dial, relocated to the right of the shift lever to accommodate right-hand drive. In 'D' (Dynamic) mode, the front spoiler adjusts its angle based on speed, and the dampers and torque-vectoring system become more responsive. Furthermore, the RACE mode, exclusive to the Quadrifoglio, disengages the traction control, challenging the driver's skills. The large paddle shifters are column-mounted, complementing the steering's quick gear ratio.
The V6 engine, producing 510ps, delivers its peak torque at a low 2,550rpm, providing impressive mid-range grunt. It's not the type of engine that relies heavily on high revs to achieve speed. Unlike the sport models from BMW and Mercedes, which often produce loud blipping sounds from the rear during downshifts or when lifting off the throttle at high revs, the exhaust note here is surprisingly subdued.
Unfortunately, the test car's P Zero tires had very little tread remaining, particularly on the sidewalls, resulting in a somewhat rough ride over uneven surfaces and road joints.
The interior features a dashboard with abundant curves, Alfa's traditional twin-dial gauges, and sport seats combining leather and Alcantara, offering a comfortably snug fit. This model is exclusively a four-seater with two rear seats. The plastic parts, such as those on the center console, which felt somewhat lacking in the standard model, have been upgraded to carbon fiber, befitting a top-tier model.
The price is ¥11,320,000, slightly less than its German rivals. However, one must consider that the 8.8-inch monitor on the center dashboard does not include a built-in navigation system, requiring the use of a connected smartphone for functions like Apple CarPlay.
