CO2 Conscious Car Choices: Best 3
European Cars Vol. 1: Displacement Up to 1.5L Class - Best 1: FIAT 500

A Compact Car Nation's Pride

Italy, a country with a particular demand for compact cars, sees the Fiat 500 take first place. Audi came in second, and Renault third, with Italy, Germany, and France dividing the rankings.

A Battle of A-Segment Contenders

Here, the entry-level Fiat 500 model, equipped with a 1.2-liter engine, secured first place. This model features a simple 1.2-liter engine without any special mechanisms, boasting modest specifications of 69ps maximum output and 102Nm maximum torque. The choice of a 2-valve over a 4-valve system is likely intended to improve filling efficiency at low RPMs for city driving, thereby enhancing fuel economy. With a respectable fuel consumption of 19.2 km/L under the 10-15 mode, its CO2 emissions stand at 113g/km. Coming in second place is the model that became an instant hit upon its release in Japan late last year,Audi A1.

AUDI A1

RENAULT TWINGO

Currently offered in a single grade, the Volkswagen Group's pride, the 1.4-liter TFSI unit, combines a gasoline direct injection system (FSI) with a turbocharger to achieve sporty performance alongside low CO2 emissions and fuel efficiency. It generates a maximum torque of 200Nm from around 1,500rpm, with a high maximum output of 122ps. Securing third place is the French contender,Renault Twingo. Its inline-4 SOHC 16-valve unit produces 75ps and 107Nm. Paired with a Quickshift 5 automated manual transmission, it records CO2 emissions of 119g/km.

It's fascinating how, even with engines of similar displacement, each model's lineup strongly reflects its country of origin.

Although not included this time, the Fiat 500 0.9 TwinAir Turbo, powered by an 875cc MultiAir engine sold in Italy, achieves CO2 emissions of 92g/km, and its introduction to the Japanese market is eagerly awaited.
