Skincare x Physical Touch = "Skincare-ship"?!
A survey revealed that when couples or partners give and receive skincare, a practice termed "skincare-ship," it fosters communication and deepens their relationship. The beauty appliance brand SALONIA hosted an event to let participants experience this firsthand.

Sharing Beauty Appliances is the New Normal
More men are paying attention not only to hair care but also to skincare and hair removal. Beauty is no longer solely a concern for women; it's a matter of interest for anyone who desires to be healthy and true to themselves. Furthermore, beauty devices previously only available in esthetic salons are now being developed for home use, making at-home care more accessible and boosting recent demand for beauty products.
SALONIA, a Japanese beauty appliance brand, began in 2012 with the sale of hair irons. It champions minimalist design, simple functionality and engineering, and the dual goals of salon quality and cost-effectiveness. Expanding beyond hair care, the brand now offers a comprehensive lineup of at-home skincare products, gaining attention for its stylish design and accessible price points.
SALONIA conducted a survey on "Awareness of Skincare and Haircare Among Couples and Partners" targeting 1,291 men and women aged 20 to 40. The results were surprising: the monthly amount spent on home skincare and haircare by men in their 20s exceeded that of women in the same age group. Moreover, when asked, "Do you share skincare or haircare items with your partner?" a remarkable 76.5% of respondents reported sharing beauty appliances and goods.
Further questioning couples and partners aged 20 to 30, "Have you ever given or received skincare or haircare from your partner?" revealed that over half, 59.2%, answered "Yes." When asked about the benefits, 680 respondents cited increased physical intimacy, deepened affection for their partner, and a closer bond.
Based on these findings, SALONIA coined the term "skincare-ship" for engaging in skincare and haircare together and organized an event to explore how it can activate communication between couples and partners. Three couples and partners, aged 29 to 31, were invited. They tested three devices: the "EMS Lift Brush" to stimulate facial and scalp muscles, the "Aqua Peeling Device" for pore cleansing with dual water stream and suction, and the "Pure Bright Steamer," a recipient of the Good Design Award.
Though slightly nervous in front of the many reporters, the three pairs were captivated by the new items. One man, who had not previously been very active in skincare, commented, "I especially felt the effectiveness of the Aqua Peeling, and it was easy to use." A woman added, "I sometimes buy face masks to use with my partner, but sharing beauty appliances seems like a good idea too."
One man, who had previously visited esthetic salons but found it increasingly bothersome and drifted away from beauty routines, remarked, "It's great to be able to do skincare easily at home whenever I think of it. Trying it out actually made our conversation more lively and enjoyable." His partner also expressed interest, saying, "I particularly liked the EMS brush and would like to share it with my partner," indicating that both partners had a positive impression of the beauty appliances.
From the start of the trial, exclamations of "Amazing," "Feels good," and "Doesn't hurt" were heard from one couple. When asked for their impressions, they responded positively: "I never really used beauty appliances before, but I want to enjoy the steamer, which really shows its moisturizing effect, with my husband. I also like how the design blends with the room's interior," and "Even though I'm lazy, I feel I can use SALONIA products."
To coincide with "Good Couple Day," SALONIA recently released a "Skincare-ship Verification Movie." The film features couples who feel their physical intimacy has decreased since having children, and couples who find intimacy awkward, but all participants highly praise the effects of "skincare-ship." Their comments are convincing. Even those who haven't been particularly interested in beauty appliances before will likely feel compelled to pick them up in stores.
