What Running Has Given Me
—We heard that your participation in the 2000 Honolulu Marathon for a TV program企画 was your starting point. Were you exercising before that?
No, I wasn't particularly. So, the Honolulu Marathon was a shocking experience for me. It was my first time running a full marathon, and I remember being so encouraged by the kindness of the local Hawaiian people and the climate. I've participated every year since then, and last year marked my 10th anniversary.
—That's amazing! How far do you usually run?
About 10km in 60 minutes. Of course, I train more when there's a race, but these days I take it easy (laughs). I always run around the Imperial Palace, and recently, with the running boom, there are more runners, which motivates me. It's also great that there's a lot of greenery and no traffic lights. I also train in Chiba, where my coach lives.
—Why do you think you've continued running for 10 years?
I think the biggest reason is simply that I love running, but it's also for maintaining my health. Running improves my physical condition and helps me maintain balance, so for me, running is an indispensable part of my lifestyle. Before I started, I barely sweated, which led to poor metabolism and frequent illnesses. Since I started running, I've become healthier. I don't even catch colds anymore, and improved metabolism has made me less concerned about dryness and dark circles, making my skin feel cleaner. Also, by shedding unnecessary things, my body's desires have changed, and I find myself wanting to eat things that are good for me, things that truly nourish my body. My body has become capable of absorbing that nourishment. Getting certified as a Vegetable & Fruit Master was also inspired by running.

Running is a Time for Self-Dialogue
—Have there been any changes mentally as well?
I've become more inclined to try new things and more patient. Before, I didn't have much time to face my own health and mental state, but through running, I've gained more time for self-dialogue. Also, running outdoors throughout the year allows me to feel the changing seasons, and I believe my senses—the scent of flowers, the smell of the air, the heat, the cold—become increasingly refined.
—Have you ever thought about quitting?
No. I don't push myself to the point of wanting to quit in my daily runs, and when I do push myself, it's with a clear goal. Although I'm not a professional athlete and could stop anytime, I do it because I genuinely want to.
—What do you think is the appeal of running?
It's accessible, light, and anyone can start and enjoy it. All you need are shoes and wear, and you can run anywhere. I often travel for work, and I run wherever I go on location. It's enjoyable to see different scenery and get to know the area. Also, the effort you put in is directly reflected, which leads to a sense of accomplishment and confidence. It makes you think more positively, is good for beauty, and refreshes your body.
—Do you have any preferences regarding wear or shoes?
In terms of functionality, shoes are very important, so I wear ones that fit me well. For fashion, there are many interesting designs coming out lately, so I enjoy incorporating one-piece dresses and skirts. I often wear a skirt with leggings. Incorporating beautiful colors, like a bright pink outfit, also lifts my mood.

What Are Your Secrets to Maintaining Beauty?
—Besides running, are there any other beauty practices you pay attention to?
I believe diet and sleep are very important. Diet, in particular, is what builds my body, so I make an effort to choose foods that my body will appreciate. I don't go for extreme weight loss; I ensure I get proper nutrition. That's how my body functions well. I eat what I want and then exercise. If you continue exercising, your body becomes efficient at burning fat.
What about sleep? My bedtime varies from day to day, but I try to go to bed during the hours I should be sleeping. Rather than long hours of sleep, I think short, deep, quality sleep is important. Also, doing things that I find enjoyable. I like surfing, and I've also started playing golf, though I'm not yet at the level of playing on a course. I try not to accumulate stress and to spend each day happily! I believe that's what leads to beauty.
—
You mentioned "beauty" just now. What does beauty mean to you as a woman?I believe true beauty is when the mind and body are both healthy, and yet beautiful. It's not just about outward appearance, but also about what emanates from within, or about having your own convictions and sticking to your style... I think that shows in your physique and facial expressions. Running is the shortest path to achieving that.
—
I see. Finally, what is running to you, Rie Hasegawa?A part of my life. Something indispensable. A treasure I'm glad I found. Something that allowed me to change. Something I'll continue for the rest of my life...

Thank you very much.Thank you.
