Product Development Fueled by Close Communication
With each new product launch, GIVENCHY surprises us with its originality. The brand's creativity transcends conventional cosmetic boundaries, focusing intently on how to enhance women's beauty, culminating in unique product creation. Nicolas Degennes, who has served as Artistic Director for Makeup and Color at GIVENCHY since 1999, and Laurent Nogueira, Scientific Communication Director at LVMH Research, have collaboratively brought to life cosmetics that are akin to entertainment, exemplified by their spherical mascara and black cream.
"We constantly share information," say Nicolas and Laurent in unison. Their communication is vibrant, with each inspiring the other's ideas, delving into curiosity and inquiry to birth numerous products. The new foundation "Éclat Matissime," launched in February 2012, which achieves the ultimate matte finish, was developed after the lab team agreed with Nicolas's idea for "a more attractive matte skin that doesn't absorb excess sebum."
Nicolas shared that his ideas originate from "my dreams." Although he has had a brilliant career as a makeup artist, he now dedicates all his passion to product development.
He explained his motivation: "I believe the role of a creator is not just to make products, but to create dreams. To give form (to products) to these dreams, I cannot achieve it without information from researchers, and their research also wouldn't advance without my dreams."
Laurent revealed the shared spirit within GIVENCHY: "As a team, we have a clear directive to create innovative things and constantly challenge ourselves with the unseen and the new. Developing new ingredients and technologies is crucial, and it's not uncommon for the lab to take the lead."
The anti-aging cream "Le Soin Noir," which garnered attention as the world's first black cosmetic, was developed when the lab team persuaded marketing that maintaining the color of the active ingredients themselves would yield maximum efficacy.
An open mind is essential in all things
This approach to development results in products that are both classic in their pursuit of beauty and uniquely original. Nicolas Degennes described the creative mindset behind GIVENCHY's groundbreaking products: "I want to keep my mind open to all possibilities." He emphasizes the importance of questioning everything, even the smallest detail, and approaching it with flexibility, curiosity, and a willingness to explore without preconceived notions. Nicolas continued:
"The phrase 'That doesn't suit me' is what I least want to hear. It's proof of being trapped by something. Once you try it, you can see with your own eyes that it suits you. I want people to enjoy makeup with a freer heart, for themselves. I've seen many women, with a flutter of excitement, apply a color I recommended to their lips and then smile with satisfaction. Therefore, I want women themselves to try new possibilities, rather than closing their hearts by thinking 'it doesn't suit me.'" For the 2012 Spring/Summer collection "Instant Bucolique," he expressed the fleeting yet vibrant bloom of spring. Delicate and fresh pinks, greens, and purples will surely adorn women's expressions.
Nicolas Degennes and Laurent Nogueira continue to present skincare and makeup products with an appealing approach and form, almost like a challenge to women. The dream of these two, who maintain a stoic attitude, in cosmetic development is "for women to feel that they have become beautiful themselves." The secret to GIVENCHY's truly innovative cosmetics lies in how they bring about a revolution within women's hearts through their use. Their open-minded exploration gently encourages women to embrace the idea that "it's okay to be greedy about becoming beautiful."
