An Interview with Master Perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour

Introducing the New Fragrance: "SARTORIAL"

The new fragrance from Penhaligon’s, the British perfumer to the Royal Household, is "SARTORIAL." With its unique name evoking a "proper tailor," the scent is truly bespoke. We spoke with Bertrand Duchaufour, a master perfumer who visited Japan for its launch.

Sartorial: A Modern Interpretation of a Classic Fougère

Master perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour is the exclusive perfumer for France's L'Artisan Parfumeur. He has created numerous masterpieces for L'Artisan Parfumeur and Penhaligon’s, and previously composed fragrances for Comme des Garçons.

The new "Sartorial" has a rather unusual name, doesn't it?

For the creation of this new scent, I visited the atelier of Norton & Sons, a bespoke tailor located at 16 Savile Row, following an idea from Penhaligon's Artistic Director.

Norton & Sons is famous as a long-established bespoke tailor, isn't it?

The moment I stepped into the shop, I was enveloped by the scents of clothing fabrics, cutting machine oil, and the steam from irons, along with the aroma of tobacco-stained cabinets, chalk dust floating in the air, and old patterns. There's a complex mix of scents in a tailor's shop.

Is the fragrance inspired by those scents in the atelier?

The theme of the fragrance is "perfection." "Sartorial" is a modern interpretation of a classic fougère. The sweet, ingrained scent of beeswax is firmly linked with traditional spices and elements like oakmoss, tonka bean, lavender, or leather and violet leaf, creating an illusion of being in a tailor's atelier.

The theme and this innovative approach are quite remarkable.

I love challenging myself with good ideas and working on new things. "Sartorial," which combines the great tradition of Penhaligon’s, a quintessential British perfumer, with that of British bespoke tailoring, is a fragrance for the new generation of gentlemen.

Do you also enjoy fashion, Bertrand?

I don't often have the occasion to wear a suit, but I frequently wear Marithe + François Girbaud, and Comme des Garçons, for whom I've created fragrances.

Thank you very much.
