The 42nd Tokyo Motor Show 2011 | Daihatsu - Photo Impression | DAIHATSU
The theme of the Daihatsu booth was “BIG ANSWER FROM SMALL.” On display were the D-X, which can transform into various styles from open sports car to off-roader by changing its resin body, and the PICO, a two-seater electric vehicle positioned between a kei car and a motorized bicycle. The PICO, in particular, is a vehicle that directly addresses various issues facing Japan, such as an aging population, depopulation, and urban overcrowding.
The most noteworthy technology is Daihatsu's original low-cost fuel cell, “FC Commercial CASE,” intended for future commercial vehicles. This “precious metal-free liquid fuel cell” eliminates the need for precious metals, resolving resource issues. It utilizes a refueling method similar to gasoline and uses a safe new liquid fuel, hydrazine hydrate (N2H4·H2O), which is non-flammable at room temperature and emits no CO2 during operation. While not flashy, it is packed with technologies that warrant close attention when considering future environmental challenges.
