Madame Grès | Madame Grès: A Gallery of Fashion Enduring Today
Madame Grès's showroom, located within the Yagi Tsusho Building in Minato-ku, Tokyo. Works by Madame Grès from the collection of Yagi Tsusho at the Kobe Fashion Museum are exhibited here on a rotating basis.
White and pale yellow silk jersey. Full length. The right side features a dolman-style sleeve attachment cut from the same fabric, while the left side is sleeveless, creating an asymmetrical composition. Pale yellow pleats are effectively inserted, resembling the majestic waterfall depicted in a Japanese painting. A simple dress with only an organza lining in the bodice. (1981)
Black silk jersey. Full length. A camisole-style dress with graceful scallops at the neckline and continuous pleats stitched down. An incredibly thin fabric, measuring 14m, is pleated into 370 folds. Eleven vertical boning pieces and bra-shaped wires are incorporated. Despite its seemingly simple exterior, the internal structure is robust. (1970)
Deep red silk taffeta pants dress. Matching silk organza veil. A harem pants-style dress with an exotic, cross-cultural flair. It features a complex three-layered structure: pants, an underskirt supported by nylon gauze, and a skirt. Even with its bold design, Grès's creations retain an unwavering elegance. (1980)
Ivory silk jersey. Full length. A bustier-style dress with an asymmetrical structure, featuring beautiful draping reminiscent of an Indian sari. The fabric is an extremely thin silk jersey with a crepe-like texture, created by highly twisted yarns in both warp and weft. The subtle crinkling adds a unique beauty. One bone on the right side. (Year of creation unknown)
White silk jersey. Full length. A culotte-style dress with a deep V-neckline, made from two types of jersey with different thicknesses. Thin jersey fabric draped from the shoulders to the front and back is loosely bloused at the waist and branches out to the inner sides of both legs. The voluminous quality, reminiscent of ancient Greek columns, exudes her characteristic exquisite austerity. (1978)
The showroom also displays design sketches, letters from celebrities, and photographs.
