Ryohei Nishino Creates Key Visuals for Montreux Jazz Festival Japan 2017, Featuring Performances by Jun Miyake, Matthew Herbert, and Joey Alexander
One of the world's three major jazz festivals, the Montreux Jazz Festival, will be held in Tokyo as "Montreux Jazz Festival Japan 2017" on November 3rd (Friday, holiday), 4th (Saturday), and 5th (Sunday).
The artists confirmed to perform this time are Matthew Herbert Brexit Big Band, Joey Alexander, and Jun Miyake.
Matthew Herbert has released conceptual works under various monikers as a pioneer of original electronic music.
This time, he will perform under the new project name, "Matthew Herbert Brexit Big Band."
This project, which adds the word "BREXIT" to "The Matthew Herbert Big Band," under which he has released two albums, is literally rooted in Britain's "withdrawal from the European Union." A key feature is the inclusion of a large choir, which was not present in his previous big band performances.
We eagerly anticipate what kind of sound this solemn new project from the brilliant Matthew Herbert will deliver.
Also appearing is the 14-year-old genius pianist Joey Alexander, who has captured the world's attention.
He displayed extraordinary talent from a young age, captivating jazz giants such as Herbie Hancock and Wynton Marsalis.
His debut album, released in 2015, was nominated for two Grammy Awards, including "Best Jazz Instrumental Album," generating significant buzz for setting the "record for the youngest nominee."
His second album, released last November, features a piano trio as its core while also showcasing original compositions, marking a new phase for him.
Expectations are high for Joey's "latest piano trio mode" in this upcoming performance as well.
Furthermore, the participation of Japanese artist Jun Miyake has been confirmed.
Based in France, Miyake is known for his international career and garnered significant attention last year for his arrangement of "Kimigayo" at the closing ceremony of the Rio Olympics.
For this performance, he will present a unique ensemble featuring a multinational unit comprising the Bulgarian vocal choir Cosmic Voices, vocalists Lisa Papineau, Kyoko Katsunuma, and Bruno Capinan, along with percussion and a string quartet.
Additionally, Ryohei Nishino is responsible for the graphic art that serves as the festival's symbol.
Nishino, active as a comedian in the duo "King Kong" and as a picture book author, has created a key visual motif inspired by his hit work "Poupelle of Chimney Town."
