Confucius Character "Kongzi Ye Ya" by Popular Chinese Artist Makes Its Japanese Debut!
The teachings of Confucius are popular not only in China but also in Japan and the West. A character based on Confucius, "Kongzi Ye Ya," is making its Japanese debut at "Content Tokyo 2019" held at Tokyo Big Sight.
"Kongzi Ye Ya" is a character born in Quzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China, the birthplace of Confucian culture. It has already become a symbolic presence in the city. The character design was handled by artist Xu Ming, who is active not only in China but also internationally. With his classical scroll paintings tied into a topknot and a long beard, his appearance combines the cuteness of anime with an intellectual image, making him approachable and relatable despite being a great historical figure.
At the venue, content will be showcased, including merchandise, manga, and movies featuring the character, as well as stamps used in WeChat, a communication app with an overwhelming share in China.
This first landing in Japan aims to foster new generations' exchange and understanding through Confucian culture, which has greatly influenced Japan, and to deepen cultural exchange both domestically and internationally. It is an unprecedented character content that combines Chinese Confucian culture with contemporary design.
About Artist Xu Ming
He is currently one of China's most outstanding anime and manga artists, having participated in the character image design for numerous cities. In addition to "Kongzi Ye Ya," his character "hello Li Bai" was previously introduced in Japan.
[Comment from Mr. Xu Ming] Both China and Japan have been influenced by Confucianism for a long time. This landing of "Kongzi Ye Ya" in Japan not only introduces Quzhou City to the world but also aims to strengthen international cultural exchange based on Confucian culture. Zhejiang Province and Shizuoka Prefecture established a friendship tie in 1982, and since then, cultural exchange activities have been frequent. This arrival of "Kongzi Ye Ya" in Japan will be an important step in the friendly exchange between China and Japan.
