A Prince Charming of French Cinema

On November 25, 1959, Gérard Philipe, a national star and the very hope of France, passed away at the tragically young age of 36, just nine days shy of his 37th birthday.

Just as America had its own tragically short-lived actor James Dean, Gérard Philipe was a star who defined the golden age of post-war French cinema. His unparalleled, exquisite beauty was beyond compare. A single photograph could captivate, showcasing a flawless visage. In motion, he was even more beautiful; no one else carried off formal wear or military uniforms with such striking elegance, exuding a slender, supple grace. He was a prince charming of French cinema, a figure from a dream. Even by French standards, Alain Delon could not compare. Leveraging his striking looks, he starred in numerous literary adaptations, playing heroes and earning the title 'The French Prince.' His sudden death at 36 left behind an image of youthful beauty, forever cementing his reputation as the 'Eternal Prince.'
His popularity extended beyond France, particularly in Japan during the 1950s, where it was immense. The reason for this widespread adoration in Japan was not just his handsome appearance, but his exceptional talent as an actor, honed through his stage work.

Evidence of this lies in the string of acclaimed films he made with the era's leading directors. He portrayed tragic heroes in 'The Devil in the Flesh,' 'The Red and the Black,' and 'Lust for Life'; romantic comedy leads in 'The Proud and the Beautiful'; seductive Don Juans in 'The Proud and the Beautiful'; and swashbuckling heroes in 'The Charterhouse of Parma' and 'The Sword of Damocles,' showcasing his versatility in each role. Philipe visited Japan in 1953 as a guest of the first French Film Festival, and photographs of top Japanese actresses mobbing him at Haneda Airport at the time attest to his incredible popularity.
