西野達氏、ニューヨークにて

「今回の『ディスカバリング・コロンブス』では総工費2億円ほどかかっているんだけど、主催したのがパブリック・アート・ファンドという非営利団体。すべて寄付でなりたっているんだよ。ブルームバーグ市長を筆頭に、ニューヨークにはアートに大金を寄付する富豪たちがたくさんいるのがすごいね」

<strong>「ディスカバリング・コロンブス」</strong> コロンブス像はかなり高い位置に建っているため、ふつうに歩いていたら、よほど上を見あげない限り目に入らない

「俺の作っているものは、ミニマルなんだよ。まず部屋を作るときには、その国の平均的な部屋を想定して作る。モニュメントに手を加えるわけでもない。つまりミニマルな内装なんだ」
